About Dryness of the Nostrils
The nasal fossae wall is covered by mucosa. The mucosa roll is to heat,    humidify and clear the air breathed (Figure 1). The mucosa normally secretes a sticky relatively viscose liquid known as mucosal (nasal) secretion. The major role of the secretion is to keep the humidified environment for the mucosal cells, and to prevent the entrance of impurities such as dust, pollen pollution or bacteria by using the secretion sticky properties.           

The mucosa is damaged in cases of colds, flue, allergies and other syndromes. This damage leads to hyper (over) secretion of quantities of mucosal secretion.
The mucosal secretion significantly decreased mainly due to side effect of commonly used medications for conditions such as: allergy, cold, acne etc. In cases of decrease quantities of the mucosal secretion the air breathed is not filtered properly and patient fills discomfort, pain, sneezing and more prone to cough in such a state the airways are more susceptible for infections (Figure 2).Dryness of the nostrils that is due to of low mucus secretion forms Atrophic Rhinitis or Rhinitis Sicca. The ability to imitate the natural mucosal secretion is advantageous and Salina Gel is a moisturizing gel that brings back the balance to the dry surface of the nostrils in order to sooth and alleviates the damaged mucosa. 


Mermaid Gel  – Ingredients and mechanism of action
Active ingredients: sodium chloride, sodium hyaluronate, Alphantha, menthol.
Application: A gentle gel applied to the nostrils.
Mode of Action:
Mermaid Gel based on saline solution as vehicle contains advanced moisturizer complex of sodium hyaluronate – Sodium hyaluronate is Primarily considered a moisturizer. As a hydrophilic molecule, it attracts water and fills the space between collagen and elastin fibers acting as a binder. Sodium hyaluronate lubricates  and protects the tissue keeping it soft and hydrated, alleviate dry and sensitive skin, promote healing, smoothes and calms the irritated nostrils and softens crust.
Alphantha - Allantoin-panthenol. Dl panthenol is known as precursor of vitamin  B5 that  attracts moisture as well , in addition it has also soothing and calming effects
Menthol – added to Mermaid Gel acts as breath refresher that helps when nasal cavities are blocked. Menthol has the ability to dilates airway for improved  breathing.
Mermaid Gel is presented in a plastic tube that allows easy application for maximal effect.

About the active Ingredients:

Sodium Hyaluronate

Sodium Hyaluronate is a glycosaminoglycan with anti-inflammatory and anti-edematous properties. Sodium Hyaluronate is a major component of skin where it is involved in tissue repair. When applied to the nostril walls, it sticks to the mucus membranes absorbing moist and moisturizing the tissue.

Alpantha

Mermaid Gel combines the use of Alpantha in nasal preparation.
Alpantha is a functional compound which combines the properties of Panthenol (known as vitamin B5) and Allantoin.
Alpantha promotes normal cell sloughing and increases water binding properties of skin. Exerts anti-inflammatory and soothing effects on irritated skin and, due to its cellular stimulating activity, accelerates healing of various skin lesions.
Alpantha is a highly skin-compatible active ingredient which helps to maintain healthy conditions of skin and mucous membranes. Its application on irritated, inflamed or injured tissue, helps relief from pain and promotes the cell-proliferation.

Glycerin - is a colorless, odorless, viscous liquid that is widely used in pharmaceutical formulations. Glycerin is widely used in cosmetics as moisturizing agent and defined as of low toxicity.

Menthol - acts as breath refresher that helps when nasal cavities are blocked.     Menthol has the ability to dilates airway for improved  breathing
